Entrepreneurship is at the heart of all nations’ stories of development. Technological innovation, employment and wealth creation all spring from successful businesses created by individuals with the ingenuity, capital and network to make them happen.
Our business-planning competition, the African Innovation Prize, supported by De La Rue, contributes to the development of these entrepreneurs by incentivising the most promising African university students to create sustainable and locally driven business models. Through seed-funding nascent ventures and sharing key business skills, the African Innovation Prize is helping to support a new cadre of African entrepreneurs that will drive the region towards greater prosperity.
The African Innovation Prize was founded in 2009, working in the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology in Rwanda. In 2012 it will launch in two other major Rwandan institutions (National University of Rwanda and the School of Finance and Banking), and also expand to Sierra Leone’s University of Sierra Leone.

African Entrepreneurship Week complements the African Innovation Prize, through training university students in the hard and soft skills of entrepreneurship. The week-long workshop aims to inspire, support and develop businesses by helping students engage in product development, understand different business models, learn how to analyse a market, build a team, network, measure performance, fund their initiatives, and much more.
